A man who previously informed on him unlocks the shed he is in and allows Mack to escape. When captured, he is roughly beaten by his pursuers, but true to his heritage, he never makes a sound. His pursuers make camp in the same area, and he must remain motionless until it gets dark, and only the sentries are awake. When he comes upon an army patrol he crawls inside an old hollow tree to hide. Mack also has strong attachments to his people's discipline and self-mastery. Although this knife is needed for Mack to survive in the wilderness, his theft of the knife gives the Yakut tracking him a clue as to where to begin searching for Mack. Knowing that 'a man with a knife can survive', he sneaks into a miner's cabin, and leaving no evidence he was there, steals preserved food, a heavy sweater, and a knife. Now, the skilled aviator must remember and practice the archery, fire-making, tracking, stalking, hunting, skinning, and ambush skills taught by his elders. It is mentioned several times in the text that these skills had been taught by his people to each generation, over thousands of years. The success of Mack's subsequent foot travel, across Siberia to the Bering Strait, is dependent on his Native American hunting, tracking, and evasion skills. The chemist is mentioned later, as the first mistake of their captor Zamatev, because it turned out he was only working on developing insect repellents. The start of the book chronicles Joe 'Mack' Makatozi's daring escape from captivity and introduces another captive, an English chemist whom the Soviets believe is working on chemical warfare agents. It was L'Amour's second-to-last published novel. The story follows his escape from captivity through the Siberian wilderness.Īlthough the exact time is never stated, it appears to be the mid- to late 1980s, as Mikhail Gorbachev's rise to power is mentioned. It tells the fictional story of Native American United States Air Force pilot Major Joseph Makatozi (Joe Mack), captured by the Soviets over the Bering Strait. Last of the Breed, is a 1987 book by Louis L'Amour.

In the midst of the hurt and the mundane, the questions and the not yets, you can forget just how far you have come. And the best part, even if you're introverted and don't know what to say, all you need to say is, 'Keep going, we're going to get through this together. How Far You Have Come is an exquisitely illustrated collection of poetry and essays from bestselling artist and writer Morgan Harper Nichols. There are opportunities to encourage around every corner. Look around your neighborhood and see if there are any elderly neighbors who may need a grocery run or some lawn maintenance done. So give it a try! Make a list of the folks in your life that you maybe haven't been in touch with in a while and send them a message on Facebook or better yet, go old fashioned and send them good (old fashioned) snail mail. Encouragement can show up in so many ways and it can often be even more uplifting to give it to others than to receive it. Whether it's a helpful or wise word, like one of the verses from our 25 Bible Verses About Encouraging Others, a hot meal delivered to your doorstep from a neighbor, a text or note from a close friend, your parents watching the kids and giving you a date night, or a literal helping hand when you've got a big cross-country move. Whatever it is, it's times like this that we could all use a little encouragement. Or maybe a global pandemic comes out of nowhere and starts threatening your sense of certainty or future plans. Sometimes there are times in life that you hit the metaphorical wall or you're about to step out and do what you've always dreamed of pursuing.
